The Lebanese Medical Association for Sexual health (LebMASH) is pleased to collaborate with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health to provide this Internship of Practicum Opportunity to students with a genuine interest in global health, sexual health, and/or LGBT health.

The practicum falls under LebMASH’s mission to advance healthcare for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) individuals and sexual/reproductive health for all individuals in Lebanon.

Brief Practicum Description & Proposed Approach:

  • Reviewing the different sources of guidelines and combining them into one.
  • Talking with key informants to gain a better sense of the situation for transgender individuals in Lebanon
  • Coordinating the work of other volunteers in Lebanon who would be mapping the market for hormonal treatment and surgeries that some transgender individuals seek.
  • Work with LebMASH to create a dissemination plan for the guidelines among the trans* community, medical professionals and the general public

Practicum Goals:
This practicum will help kick-start an educational program to be implemented on the ground in Lebanon. The program will reach out to medical professionals, provide cultural competency skills and sensitivity training in order to advance sexual health and healthcare of sexual minorities (LGBT) in Lebanon and the region.

Examples of work the intern could accomplish during the placement:

  1. Interviewing members of key organizations with focus on gender and sexual health and LGBT health and rights in Lebanon
  2. Performing a literature review
  3. Creating a culturally-sensitive Sexual and LGBT Health curriculum targeting medical professionals
  4. Securing funding and identifying key players to implement the curriculum at a later stage

This practicum will build a curriculum to be implemented at a later stage. Implementation work is not part of this practicum.
Implementation requires being physically present in Lebanon. When time comes to implementing the curriculum, priority will be given to the intern who developed it, if they wish to take part in the implementation process.

Adapting Transgender Health Guidelines to the Lebanese context
Brief Practicum Description & Proposed Approach (include primary responsibilities of student): 

LebMASH is working on adapting international guidelines on Transgender health to the Lebanese context.
Students will be helping with:
– Reviewing the different sources of guidelines and combining them into one.
– Talking with key informants to gain a better sense of the situation for transgender individuals in Lebanon
– Coordinating the work of other volunteers in Lebanon who would be mapping the market for hormonal treatment and surgeries that some transgender individuals seek.
– Work with LebMASH to create a dissemination plan for the guidelines among the trans* community, medical professionals and the general public

Practicum Goals: 

– Write guidelines on transgender health adapted to Lebanon (this could include a mapping of prices of different services provided to transgender individuals)
– Create a plan to disseminate these guidelines.

Examples of work the intern could accomplish during the practicum 

Student activities may include:
– Review the current literature about Transgender guidelines.
– Conduct key informant interviews with providers, NGOs and community leaders who work with the transgender community in Lebanon.
– Write guidelines on transgender health adapted to Lebanon and work with LebMASH to create a dissemination plan for this among the trans* community, medical professionals and the general public
– Conduct an evaluation of the market of current hormonal treatment and gender affirming surgeries conducted in Lebanon and coordinate with volunteers in Lebanon who will be mapping this market.

Skills needed by the student to complete the practicum: 

Students should be familiar with conducting a literature review.
Students should be culturally competent and be ready to learn about the field of transgender health without any discrimination.
Some knowledge in cost-effective analysis would be a plus but is definitely not a requirement.

– Preceptor is based in Baltimore and is an MPH alum.
– Remote work from Baltimore is accepted. Student can choose to travel to Lebanon if they want to but organization doesn’t fund this opportunity.
– Hours adjustable depending on the number of students recruited and on the goals discussed between student and preceptor.
